Frequently asked questions about VNUS Closure®: A powerful minimally invasive solution for varicose and spider veins.
Here are answers to some questions we are often asked by patients undergoing the Venous Closure® procedure:
- How long does the Closure procedure take?
- Will general anesthesia be used?
- Is the Closure procedure painful?
- What are the possible complications associated with the Closure procedure?
- Is age an important consideration for the Closure procedure?
- How soon will I be able to return to work and/or my normal lifestyle?
- How soon after treatment do symptoms generally improve?
- How effective is the Closure procedure?
Q. How long does the Closure procedure take?
A. The Closure procedure takes approximately 15-30 minutes to complete, although we recommend allowing approximately one hour to complete both the Closure procedure and the normal pre-treatment preparation and post-op instructions.
Q. Will general anesthesia be used?
A. In this office, local anesthesia is used although the Closure procedure can be performed under local, regional, or general anesthesia.
Q. Is the Closure procedure painful?
A. Most patients report little, if any, pain during and after the Closure procedure. In fact, patients who have experienced traditional treatments like vein stripping, and newer, modern treatments like the Closure® procedure, report much less pain with the Closure® procedure than with vein stripping or laser ablation.
Q. What are the possible complications associated with the Closure procedure?
A. As with any medical intervention, the Closure procedure is associated with several potential complications, including numbness or tingling (paresthesia), skin burns, blood clots and temporary tenderness in the treated limb. Deep venous thrombosis occurs in less than one percent of patients. The other complications are rarely if ever seen.
Q. Is age an important consideration for the Closure procedure?
A. No. By itself, age is not a factor in determining whether or not the Closure procedure is appropriate for you. The Closure procedure is used to treat patients of a wide range of ages.
Q. How soon will I be able to return to work and/or my normal lifestyle?
A. Many patients can resume normal activities immediately, and most patients return to their normal lifestyle within a day.
Q. How soon after treatment do symptoms generally improve?
A. Most patients report significant improvement in their symptoms immediately. Often they express surprise when they return to the office for their first post-op visit 3 days after surgery.
Q. How effective is the Closure procedure?
A. Published data suggests that two years after receiving treatment, 90 percent of the veins treated with the Closure procedure are not detectable by ultrasound, having been absorbed by the body. Two year data on the new ClosureFast® system demonstrates closure rates greater than 97%.
